1 Description It occurs as a clear, colorless, oily liquid having a slight aromatic odor and producing a sharp, burning sensation on the tongue.
2 Identification
Test (A)
(A) Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
3 Solubility It is practically insoluble in water and in glycerin. Miscible with alcohol, with ether and with chloroform.
4 Limit of Aldehydes The net volume of 0.1 N sodium hydroxide consumed does not exceed 0.50 mL (0.05% as benzaldehyde).
5 Specific gravity Between 1.116–1.120.
6 Congealing Temperature Not less than 18.0°C.
7 Refractive index Between 1.568 to 1.570 at 20°C.
8 Acidity Not more than 1.5 mL of 0.020 N sodium hydroxide is required to restore the pink color.
9 Assay Not less than 99.0% and not more than 100.5%.

SHELF LIFE, STORAGE AND PACKING

The shelf life is 3 years. Preserve in tight containers.
